Types of Parent Visas

The SUBCLASS 103 visa is a permanent visa that allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident of Australia or eligible New Zealand citizen. This parent visa might be applied either inside or outside Australia. If the applicant is onshore, the candidate’s current visa should not expose to No Further Stay Condition.

Criteria for applying for Parent Visa (Subclass 103 )-

  • The applicant must be an aged parent.
  • The parent must be sponsored by a child who is a permanent resident of Australia.
  • You should meet all the health and character requirements.
  • The applicant must meet the balance of family test.

A contributory parent visa (permanent) allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay in Australia. The processing time that 143 visa takes is around 3 to 4.5 years. An essential requirement to satisfy Contributory Parent Visa is to pass the balance of the family test.

Criteria for applying for Subclass 143 Visa-

  • The applicant must prove their relationship with the sponsor.
  • The applicant must meet the health and character requirements.
  • Visa holders of subclass 173 are not eligible for this visa.

The SUBCLASS 173 is a temporary contributory parent visa which allowed the parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay temporarily in Australia. The Contributory Parent Visa has a temporary period of 2 years and applicant will be eligible to apply permanent subclass 143 visa.

Criteria for applying for Subclass 173 Visa-

  • First step to apply Contributory Parent Visa (Temporary) is to get an approval on sponsorship.
  • Applicant would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation.
  • The applicant must meet the health and character requirements.
  • The applicant must prove their relationship with the sponsor.
  • The applicant might not be eligible for this visa if they have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. 


A contributory aged parent visa allows aged parents of Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia by granting a permanent visa. Applicant must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.

Criteria for applying for Subclass 864 Visa-

  • First step to apply Contributory Aged Parent Visa is to get an approval on sponsorship.
  • The applicant must meet the health and character requirements.
  • Applicant can stay in Australia as a permanent resident and will be eligible to work and study in Australia by holding this visa.
  • The applicant must prove their relationship with the sponsor.


An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can sponsor this visa to their aged parents for temporary stay in Australia. Applicant will re-ceive 2 years of stay grant after completing all the requirements.

Criteria for applying for Subclass 884 Visa-

  • First step to apply this visa is to get an approval on sponsorship.
  • The applicant must meet the health and character requirements.
  • The applicant must prove their relationship with the sponsor and also should provide the details of all the family members of applicant and sponsor.
  • The applicant might not be eligible for this visa if they have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. 
  • The applicant must prove their relationship with the sponsor.


An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen can sponsor this visa to their aged parents for Permanent stay. Applicant should be on shore at the time of lodgement and might also eligible for Australian citizenship after subclass 804 visa grant.

Criteria for applying for Subclass 804 Visa-

  • Applicant will be eligible for all government services as a citizen.
  • Must meet the health and character requirements.
  • The applicant must pass the balance of family test and prove their relationship with sponsor.
